Prologue
“But what the f... is it?” commuters often exclaim as they pass through the Elephant and Castle northern roundabout, casting a glance at a rather strange iron box in the middle of this “Vehicular Nightmare” ( in the words of John McKean, a former architect and a tutor at the London College of Printing). The box does not accommodate any secret nuclear waste, as some people rumour, but it is a home of Northern Line Underground Electrical Substation and a memorial to a famous local scientist Michael Faraday.
The substation will be relocated in the unknown future and the roundabout will disappear as a part of the largest urban regeneration scheme in Europe.
